The Fourmile Mine Explosion of 26 December 1945
Joe Hatfield, the last surviver, was the last of the nine rescued to pass out and where his head laid, the slate was wet from his saliva. His light was still burning and that is how they were found. His dinner bucket was by his side and when he was lifted to the stretcher, his bucket was placed beside him and was delivered to my Mom when the ambulance carrying him to the hospital was stopped by our house in Wallsend. My Uncle Charlie Hatfield got out, came in to Mom, gave her the bucket and assured her that Dad was alive and on his way to the hospital. She had been in bed with an eleven month old son and they both had pneumonia. Mom has decided that the Historical Society should have this dinner bucket.
