Mrs Gladys (Elmer T) Lee was actually teaching at Lone Jack at the time of the explosion and there were no Salvation Army nor Red Cross at the mine passing out anything because the Red Cross tried to rent blankets and sell coffee and were dispatched. There were a few men and young boys huddled around 55 gallon drums used for burning wood & coal to keep warm and there was no shelter to prevent the cold rain from making them miserable; nor was there any food available ..
